Etymology: From copul. ὀ (s. v.) and πάτρη `paternal descent' (s. πατήρ); Sommer Nominalkomp. 142 ff. w. extensive treatment. After Wackernagel Festgabe Kaegi 63 ff. (= Kl. Schr. 1, 491 ff.; agreeing Schwyzer 106, Risch Mus. Helv. 2, 21 f.) however Aeol. for ὀ-πάτρ-ιος (Lyc. 452) `having the same father'; certainly possible. - DELG derives the verb from *ὁπᾱ (sic) `suite' from ἕπομαι, perh. through an ὀπάω.
